The Game
The game I saw on August 28, 1999 in St. Louis was a good one. The starting pitchers were Kevin Millwood for the Braves and Darren Oliver for Cardinals, and both pitched great games. Oliver pitched 9 shutout innings, and Kevin Millwood became the first Brave in six years to throw 10 innings, all scoreless with 9 strikeouts. Mark McGwire nearly hit his 52nd home run in the bottom of the ninth, but Andruw Jones pulled it in just shy of the warning track. The game stayed 0-0 until the 13th inning when Cards reliever Ricky Bottalico gave up the winning run on an RBI single by Gerald Williams. The Braves put up a couple more runs in that inning. John Rocker loaded the bases in the bottom half of the 13th, but got out of the jam to preserve the game and the shutout. It was a very fun contest to watch and a great pitching duel.
